In an Australian first, Gladstone Regional Council has launched its 10-year economic transition roadmap to support and guide the region to becoming a renewable energy superpower. The roadmap will see this community in prime position to respond to once-in-a-generation changes in the energy sector.

In partnership with Rockhampton Regional Council and Livingstone Shire Council, PFCQ works with take-away food businesses, restaurants and food vendors to eliminate single-use plastic items. Since the commencement of the program in 2021, 417,320k single-use plastic items eliminated from waste and litter streams.

Protecting Biodiversity since ’73!: Capricorn Conservation Council

CCC has been the peak environmental advocacy group protecting CQ biodiversity since 1973. This year our focus to save the endangered Ghost Bat has seen community come together to protect and conserve the Mount Etna National Park and surrounds. CCC is working with QPWS & DES towards a Recovery Plan in 2023.

Bringing Nature back to Frenchmans Creek, Rockhampton: CQUniversity

The program gives students the opportunity to develop their knowledge of the local area and practicals skills in ecosystem management. The work conducted has allowed the return of beneficial insects, marsupials and regrowth of provenance plants.

The Reef Guardian Councils Climate change initiatives snapshot showcases the actions, both big and small, that the 19 local governments, including those in the Fitzroy Basin, are taking to reduce greenhouse emissions and help protect the Great Barrier Reef and build its resilience.

Fitzroy Basin Association: Australian Government Funded Projects

Fitzroy Basin Association is currently rolling out many Australian Government-funded programs. These programs are supported by nationwide initiatives such as the National Landcare Program, the Reef Trust, Fisheries Habitat Restoration and the Environmental Restoration Fund. All programs work to address all assets outlined in the CQSS2030.

Old Guys Restoring Ecosystems (OGREs): Mt Etna Conservation

Mount Etna Caves National Park (Mt Etna) is one of central Queensland’s earliest conservation sites and home to threatened species and ecological communities. Caring for it is a community group named Old Guys Restoring Ecosystems (OGREs). Over the last five years the OGREs have collected over 5,000 seeds, planted thousands of trees, and pulled massive quantities of weeds.

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation, through the Reef Trust Partnership with the Australian Government, has committed to investing $1.6 million to reinstate critical monitoring activities for the high-priority Fitzroy Basin.

Cotton Australia: Grants to boost cotton farm water efficiency and sustainability

An Emerald cotton farmer is using every opportunity, including grants, trials and best practice to make a major contribution to learnings and lessons around water efficiency and soil health. Danni Ingram says grants have helped her to optimise water management on the farm and get the best out of every drop of water.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation: Fitzroy Water Quality Program

The Fitzroy Water Quality Program aims to stop 50,000 tonnes of fine sediment from the Fitzroy River basin entering the Reef's waters every year. This $19.6 million investment under the Reef Trust Partnership supports five projects focussed on remediating degraded land and improving land management.

Brigalow Catchment Study: Monitoring Fitzroy Grazing Management Practices

Pollutants in runoff from grazing land contribute to the ongoing poor health of the Great Barrier Reef. The Brigalow Catchment Study found that heavy grazing in the Fitzroy Basin had 2.5 times more bare ground, 3.6 times more runoff and 3.2 times more total suspended solids in runoff than conservative grazing.

Alluvium: Australia’s largest bank stabilisation project on the Fitzroy River

Alluvium’s restoration planning work on the Fitzroy River has informed two of Australia’s largest streambank stabilisation projects resulting in an estimated 50,000 tonnes per year of fine sediment from reaching and impacting on the Great Barrier Reef.
